How to create a functional sewing space!

Currently the sewing room is just that a sewing room. But it's very soon going to be another guest bedroom with a queen bed. (Why is it when people die, WE end up with the big stuff like queen beds? lol)
So I'm sitting here trying to work out how to make it functional and work well. Not easy in a room thats not even 4x4m!
I've drawn up a to scale room plan, and then have cut out wee items of furniture (think bed, sewing tables, dressers) that are also to scale.
It'd be so much easier if I could use just a bench top on one wall, all machines could be set up and it'd look great! Instead of the sewing table + large kitchen table that is a family heirloom!
I'll work it out... Somehow.

  1. Do you NEED another guest room? If not, you could just prop the bed against the wall and cover it with a sheet (use it as a backdrop for taking photos, or maybe to hang projects on), and then just pull it down if you ever need it. Better than a bed taking up all your space if you don't really need it.

    Good luck!

  2. Don't NEED another guest room, but we do often have a lot of strays, so it wouldn't go astray. And I can't quite imagine propping it up with the big timber frame, *giggles at the thought*
I think Ive managed to work out the room though so it looks functional. Exciting!

  3. Well, at least you'll have a handy place to nap if you exhaust yourself sewing. :D I'm glad you've worked it out!

  4. Just have to say - I love your reviews and have just found your blog. The aubergine merino you bought in Auckland was fabulous. Are you going to post a pic of the sewing room? (Jealous - I sew in a messy corner of the lounge, I feel guilty whenever I don't put the machine away)

  6. Thanks Stef!

It's really no further. I've had a busy couple of days, but I have done some organising. I might do a bit more tomorrow. I need someone to help me move all the furniture!

But I'll post a picture of something I made up for the sewing room ;)

  7. Oh and Lyndle, thank you. That merino would definitely be one of my favourite buys, I LOVE it. Can't wait to go back to Auckland to Designer Textiles and get more. What a dream store that is.

I will post pictures of the room when it's done. It'll be a corner more than anything though once this flipping bed gets moved in!
